In 1960, a small
male curly-coated kitten was found near an old mine in Devon, South
West England.
Breeding with a
local female lead to the birth of multiple kittens of which only one
was curly-coated; this kitten was given the appropriate name of Kirlee.
This proved that the gene responsible for the curly coat was recessive
and that the parents of the kitten were closely related. Initially,
to maintain Kirlee's characteristics, members of a same litter were
breeded. Afterward, Kirlee was breed with a few Rex Cornish females,
but none of the kitten born had a curly coat. It was found that the
gene responsible for the curly coat of the Rex Devon comes from a different
mutation; the result was that Rex Cornish and Rex Devon were from then
on were developed independently from one another .
Devon Rex has a
really thin, sliky and curly fur. If you touch it, you'll never forget
its softness. These cats even have curly whiskers!

The
Devon Rex's behavior
To
describe the Devon Rex in few words, we could say : cute gremlin look,
large ears, curly fur and acting like a little clown! The Devon Rex cat
is not an ordinary cat! It is a playful and lovely animal who can also
be mischievous. Very cuddly, even sometime "a real stick of glue", he
gives his love without any limit. He follows his master everywhere with
happiness and more than anything, he likes to cuddle in front of a movie
;)
The
Devon Rex's intelligence is higher than average, but he remains a cat!
He loves napping in the sun or near the radiator! He does not like to
be alone. If you show him your love every day, he'll offer you the best
of himself. He's a really nice cat, never angry or aggressive. To share
a Devon Rex's life is a wonderful adventure!
Devon
Rex kittens grow quite rapidly, but adult fur won't appear before at least
6 months. They almost never lose hair (not more than a human being!),
which is why they're well tolerated by allergic people (I am allergic
to fur and so is my son, and both of us have little or no problems with
the Devon Rex).
For
me and my son, it's the perfect cat!
Care
A Devon
Rex cat requires very little care. A weekly bath and claw cut. Their ears
need a little bit more care as they get dirty easily. You wash his ears
with cotton and cleaning milk (you can find everything you need at your
pet shop). NEVER use Q-Tips.
Let's
talk about allergies
Saliva
and hair are strong allergens. The FEL D1 is "glycoprotein" present in
saliva and in the animal fur. It spreads all over cat's body when he washes
himself. His saliva being highly allergenic, a few minutes after touching
the animal, the allergic person get itchy and red eyes, asthma and sneezing.
If
you only have few symptoms, antihistamines treatment can help, but it
doesn't solve the problem because you cannot take this medication for
a long period of time. With time, Your body will become accustomed and
the medication will be less effective.
Devon
Rex are said to be hypoallergenic cats, still certain very sensitive individuals
may still have some allergic reaction. But, often for these people, the
allergic reaction disappears after a certain period of time.
The
Devon Rex cat loses his fur only once, between 6 and 10 months, after
which his adult fur appears. Consequently, , he loses very little hair,
so you will find less hair on clothes and the floor!!!
Solutions
to allergy
The
alternative I preferred was acupuncture. At first, I was really sceptic,
but after 3 sessions, my symptoms had disappeared!!! It was a real joy
for me to live with my lovely cats without feeling any symptoms! For me,
this is the ideal alternative.
There's
also a natural plant named "Plantain", which I didn't try it you can find
more information on plantain on the the Internet (in French) at:
2 other
medicines can help. One is sold in pet shop: Allerpet. The other one is
sold in drugstore: Singular. This last product helps relieves asthma by
dilating airways. You will need a doctor's prescription for the product
sold in drugstores. Many people have had very good results!
